One of the things people say, when I tell them that I really really want an electric car, is “what if it runs out of power?” Which is a funny thing to say, really. As though internal combustion engines have infinite power sources, right?
But however specious that argument is (VERY!) it’s been solved by companies like Scott Jones, Ace Parking, which has helped setting out to save the world (no, I’m not being hyperbolic, as helping keep the environment clean and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels is a very real way to save the world) by providing a place to recharge your car.
Ace Parking is doing that by putting solar charging and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations into their parking lots. Which, BY THE WAY, is another way EVs are way better than gas-powered cars: you can refuel while you do something else. Which means no more standing outside your car freezing while you pump $4.00/gallon gas and some gas station attendant walks around smoking and threatening to blow you up, which is a REAL THING that REALLY happened to me. Instead you can just park your car, and recharge it while you’re at work, the beach, the movies, etc.
I think this is a great thing. No matter what you think about how much fossil fuel we have left or how efficient gas powered cars can have, it’s clear that both are finite resources. Electricity can be generated by solar power which, though finite too, will last a lot longer than we will. So why not do everything we can to switch over to a better source of energy that it just so happens also doesn’t pollute the air and water?
We should all help in the effort. Maybe going electric car isn’t something you can do now, but you can help out by parking at Ace Parking, or by contributing to companies they support, like the Alzheimer’s Association or the San Diego Opera. Or just go a bit greener in your life: use less power. Recycle. Walk to places that are nearby instead of driving. Send money to a blogger whose blog you are reading right now. OK, I don’t know how that last one helps the environment but it couldn’t hurt and I’m short on cash. Or just go park at places where Scott Jones, Ace Parking lots has set up shop. That will help, too.
